چکیده

This paper introduces an eecient adaptation of the branch-and-bound technique that solves real-world rostering problems for airline crews. The eeciency of the algorithm is based on the exploitation of rostering-speciic properties (e.g. variable selection, branching strategy and cutting-planes), an approach that shortens the solution process and outperforms standard techniques. Furthermore, we formally introduce a general concept of downgrading that makes it possible to solve certain rostering problems that might otherwise have no solution. This paper also computes a sample monthly schedule on the basis of a medium-sized European airline's real data. Scheduling cabin and cockpit crews and their assignment to ights are important and diicult planning functions that most airlines undertake on a monthly basis. These are important tasks, given that crew costs are the highest factors of direct operational cost besides fuel. The diiculty of these tasks lies in the fact, that they refer to large-scale, complex problems that incorporate numerous regulative requirements and collective bargaining agreements. Solving a rostering problem includes the construction of individualized schedules that take into account various pre-assignments (like training or observer ights) as well as crew-requests (like days-oo or preferred ights). Using real data from a medium-sized European airline we demonstrate that our approach generates eecient solutions.

Airline Crew Rostering: Problem Types, Modeling, and Optimization

Airline crew rostering is an important part of airline operations and an interesting problem for the application of operations research. The objective is to assign anonymous crew pairings either to personalized rosters or to anonymous bidlines which subsequently will be assigned to individual crew members. Compared to the crew pairing problem, crew rostering has received much less attention in ...

Or in Airline Industry or in Airline

Next to fuel costs, crew costs are the largest direct operating cost of airlines. Therefore much research has been devoted to the planning and scheduling of crews over the last thirty years. The planning and scheduling of crews is usually considered as two problems: the crew pairing problem and the crew assignment (rostering) problem. These problems are solved sequentially. In this paper we foc...

Team-oriented Airline Crew Rostering for Cockpit Personnel

Airline crew scheduling is a comparably well-studied field in Operations Research. An increasing demand for higher crew satisfaction arises; especially after most relevant cost factors have been optimized to their greatest extent, mostly with secondary or little regard on quality-of-life criteria for the involved crew members. One such criterion is team-orientation. Independent from the chosen ...

A Multicommodity Flow Approach to the Crew Rostering Problem

The problem of finding a work assignment for airline crew members in a given time horizon is addressed. In the literature this problem is usually referred to as the airline crew rostering problem. It consists of constructing monthly schedules for crew members by assigning them pairings, rest periods, annual and sick leave, training periods, union activities, and so forth, so as to satisfy the c...

Using Differential Evolution Method to Solve Crew Rostering Problem

Airline crew rostering is the assignment problem of crew members to planned rotations/pairings for certain month. Airline companies have the monthly task of constructing personalized monthly schedules (roster) for crew members. This problem became more complex and difficult while the aspirations/criterias to assess the quality of roster grew and the constraints increased excessively. This paper...
